“Reconstruction Airport Piano” will be installed at Sendai Airport. Reconstruction Airport Piano and Yumi Sakurai (Photo taken in February 2021) We would like to express our deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in the 2020 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, and extend our deepest sympathies to those affected.
With the aim of focusing on earthquake recovery efforts, Sendai International Airport Co., Ltd. will be installing a “Recovery Airport Piano” for a limited time starting March 1st (Friday). The installation at Sendai Airport began as part of the “Earthquake 10th Anniversary Memorial Project” carried out in 2021, 10 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake, and this year marks the fourth year.
The piano that will be installed was one that was damaged and repaired in Shichigahama Town, Miyagi Prefecture, and the damage from the time of the disaster remains intact. In addition to conveying the memory of the earthquake and the steps toward recovery through its appearance and tone, we will also support the “recovery of the heart” through the power of music.

■About the piano to be installed
YAMAHA G3, made in 1980. The owner is Yumi Sakurai, a piano instructor who lives in Shiogama City.
At the time, it was placed on the second floor of a building on the premises of Sakurai’s parents’ home in Shichigahama Town, Miyagi Prefecture.
After the tsunami, the building caught the attention of
singer-songwriter Metis, who was visiting for relief work, which led to restoration work and revitalization. It is currently stored in Shichigahama Town.
In response to the recent earthquake, our company has placed a donation box on the second floor of the terminal building at the general store.
It is installed in “Hagi”. The donations received will be delivered to those affected by the disaster through the Japanese Red Cross Miyagi Prefecture Branch. Thank you for your cooperation.
