“Communication of Warmth” from February 17th to March 8th, 2024. Rei Kizumoto (b.1998) was born in Shiga Prefecture and graduated from the Kyoto University of Arts in 2023 with a master’s degree in art and crafts, majoring in oil painting. Currently based in Osaka, he creates paintings by cutting felt material, which is strongly associated with the artist’s childhood memories, into random shapes and arbitrarily throwing them around to create the resulting arrangement on canvas. For Kizumoto, the material felt is synonymous with play toys and building blocks of simple colors, and by arranging and overlapping them, he creates works that depict how simple shapes take on different meanings and form the world. I’m drawing. For example, one
handkerchief can be used as a doll’s futon, and other times as a bouquet of flowers, and it can be described as a feeling similar to childhood play, where a handkerchief is replaced in the blink of an eye with countless “likeness”. Felts of different shapes and colors are used in the artist’s work, and as they gradually accumulate, they appear from different angles in different works. Felt, which is assigned a different role in each work, colors Kizumoto’s works as something that can be anything, from physical things to abstract concepts.
According to the concept based on the currents of modern Western thought, the world is divided into subjects and objects, and we are seen as beings who are alienated from the world, which is our object. In the series of rituals that Kizumoto performs as a prelude to production, in which he selects and throws cut pieces of felt, the distinction between subject and object that this concept draws is blurred. The artist performs the act of conceiving a painting, which belongs to the subject, by interacting with the object of felt, and presents works that are rendered as ambiguous emotions that do not form a clear image. This is a new perspective for understanding the world, and at the same time, it can be said to be a new possibility for painting that goes beyond the existing framework of representation and abstraction.
This exhibition is titled “Communication of Warmth,” based on the series of rituals in which the artist attempts to capture the world through felt during the production process, and will be held in 2024 as an exhibition of works that won the special prize at the 3rd Anonymous Collection Competition. We will exhibit his latest works, including No. 500 – Floating Shape – (2023), which was exhibited at anonymous bldg. in Aoyama, Tokyo in January.
Please take this opportunity to take a look.
