* Background behind Fujimaki Department Store’s support of traditional crafts and special cooperation with the Edo Kiriko Cherry Blossom Festival *
*One of Fujimaki Department Store’s important missions is to “convey the splendor and charm of traditional crafts”*
Nowadays, we are living in an age where we are overflowing with things and can easily get good and cheap things, so the theme is “choosing things in an era of too much stuff.”
Meanwhile, traditional crafts are once again attracting attention as a good example of Japanese manufacturing, but the market size is shrinking year by year. The main reason is the emergence of cheaper products and substitutes, but we are also facing the problem of a decline in production capacity due to a lack of successors and an aging population.
Similar issues exist in the Edo Kiriko industry, and measures are being taken to address them, but there are limits to this, and we at Fujimaki Department Store would like to work together to resolve these issues.
One of them is the Edo Kiriko Cherry Blossom Festival. Through this event, which is now in its 6th year, we will overcome the challenges of the Edo Kiriko industry: “increasing awareness of Edo Kiriko,” “improving the skills of Edo Kiriko craftsmen,” and “nurturing young craftsmen.” We will make suggestions.
*What is Edo Kiriko*

It is said that in 1834, Kyubei Kagaya, a Vidro maker in Odenmacho, Edo, carved carvings on the surface of glass using diamond sand, which is the beginning of Edo Kiriko, which is still known today. In the Meiji period, European cut glass techniques were introduced and developed into Edo Kiriko, which has been passed down to the present day. It was designated as a traditional craft of Tokyo in 1985, and as a national traditional craft in 2002.
*What is Edo Kiriko Cooperative*
The Edo Kiriko Cooperative Association aims to promote and develop businesses and craftsmen engaged in the glass processing industry, including Edo Kiriko, and to inherit and nurture the long tradition of Edo Kiriko as a glass craft that pursues beauty and quality. It is a cooperative whose purpose is to
Edo Kiriko was designated as a traditional craft by the Tokyo government on July 15, 1985, and was designated as a traditional craft by the government on January 30, 2002. The association has many people who have received a number of prestigious certifications, including the Tokyo Traditional Craftsman and the Japanese Traditional Craftsman, which are given to those who hold them.
