Some of the results of joint research between Higo Bank and Kumamoto University won an award in a data analysis competition!
……
A team from Higo Bank analyzed data from the Financial Data
Utilization Promotion Association (Representative Director: Takuro Okada) in “Statistical mathematical research to decipher human behavioral patterns from data” jointly conducted by Higo Bank and Kumamoto University. We participated in the “2nd Financial Data Utilization Challenge” competition and won 10th place in the “Regional Financial Institutions Category.” This competition aims to discover and develop human resources who can utilize data at financial institutions, and 1,562 people (of whom 405 worked at financial institutions and submitted 21,593 entries) participated.
-Background to the award-
Specially appointed professor Shinichiro Nakamura of the Frontier Data Science Kaketsu Kenkyu Endowed Chair, Graduate School Initiative Organization, has been commissioned by Higo Bank to conduct joint research with the goal of improving the bank’s ability to utilize data science. Starting this year, Higo Bank has sent two young employees to our university for training, where they are learning data processing methods and programming literacy through friendly guidance and discussions with Assistant Professor Yuki Harada. We are progressing smoothly to the stage where we aim to apply and establish the system in banking practice. We entered this competition as a “test of our skills” to measure our abilities, and the fact that we were able to win this award in just one year after starting our joint research can be considered a major accomplishment.
-Future outlook-
In this joint research, by learning a wide range of computational science, which is the research field of the Nakamura laboratory, we will not only acquire basic knowledge and skills to respond to practical needs in data analysis and predictive modeling. , we aim to obtain the latest methods by applying them to real problems. In the future, it is hoped that the use of data in banking operations will become even more sophisticated, and that this will lead to the revitalization of local industry in the region.
