◆Overview
On March 11, 2024, National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) will support startups in the region by the Chugoku Headquarters and Shikoku Headquarters of the Japan Small and Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation Organization (SME Corporation), an independent
administrative agency. At the Chugoku-Shikoku Startup Support Seminar, which was held to strengthen networks among students, our university’s President Yasutomo Nasu took to the podium and gave a lecture on our university’s efforts to create startups and ventures.
In the lecture, he began by talking about the important role ventures play as innovators who lead to social change in promoting the social implementation of research results and solving social issues. He explained that he is positioning “nurturing momentum” as an important project, creating an environment for entrepreneurship, and building a university-wide support system. In conducting these activities, we adhere to what needs to be preserved and quickly change what needs to be changed based on the concept of “improper” and “fashionable”, set deadlines and gather members across the organization, and maintain mobility and psychological safety. Our policy is to use an “agile organizational structure” to create a team that excels in business, and to “collaborate with a variety of institutions” to enrich our resources by collaborating with a variety of industry, academia, government, and financial institutions that support ventures within and outside the prefecture. Next, as concrete measures, we have opened the “Okaya University Venture Support Terrace V-Story”, a one-stop consultation service, and held the “Okaya University Pitch Contest” to discover and foster university-based ventures. We are working to foster entrepreneurial momentum by holding entrepreneurship-related events and educational programs, positioning entrepreneurship education as “cultivating the spirit of taking on challenges without fear of failure, without necessarily aiming to start a business.” Introduced.
Finally, he expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “While working to create university-based startups and ventures, we will change the mindset of faculty and staff and Okayama University itself, and create a new form of university.”
In the panel discussion that followed, Associate Professor Takefumi Shimizu of the Department of Health System Integration Science, Faculty of Academic Research, who is the owner of the Okayama University Innovation Management Core (IMaC) Venture Support Field Project, took the stage as a panelist. The theme of the discussion was what support organizations should do to discover and develop startups in the Chugoku-Shikoku region.
Okayama University promotes startup/venture creation, which is an activity that creates new value. Furthermore, the efforts of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Project to Promote the Strengthening of Regional Core and
Distinctive Research Universities (J-PEAKS)” (implemented by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science), which was adopted last year, failed to promote social change through startups and ventures.
