“Global Learner’s” is a consulting English conversation school for students entering boarding schools in Japan and overseas.
Institute’ (GLI) jointly held a weekend study abroad program on March 20th in collaboration with Yokosuka Bilingual School (YBS).

YBS is a bilingual school located in the global city of Yokosuka, providing a learning environment for children of various nationalities and cultural backgrounds, from pre-school children to elementary school students. Normally, bilingual schools place emphasis on improving English proficiency, but at YBS we focus on transcending language barriers, deepening mutual cultural understanding, and having fun together. Being able to accept different cultures and ways of thinking, and respecting diversity, allows people to have confidence in their own identity, which expands their possibilities in the world.

During the last weekend study abroad, I was able to enjoy meeting new friends while being overwhelmed by the unique atmosphere of a bilingual school through my first study abroad experience. There were 10 participants this time, including junior high school interns.

In the YBS class, international students and Japanese students worked together. Children who participated in level-based classes such as poetry reading said, “They were speaking so fast that I couldn’t translate it into Japanese, so I had to struggle to understand the English.” There were also honest voices.

The junior high school interns sometimes played the role of teachers and gained valuable experience supporting students from both schools. In addition to actively answering the teacher’s questions, the students also experienced a real “American communication
environment” in which they expressed their own opinions and asserted their opinions, and some students were a little surprised by the atmosphere, which was different from that of Japanese schools. did.

Sports activities were held in the afternoon, with participants forming teams and taking part in various competitions. There were sack races, spoon races, three-legged races, and an egg hunt unique to this time of year. The tension during class was relieved, and communication among participants became more active.

After school, the international students participated in a variety of activities including soccer, crafts, and card games. These experiences not only improved their English skills, but also encouraged them to interact with peers from different backgrounds, and as a result, the international students were able to grow and learn.

We will continue our interaction with YBS in 2024, providing opportunities for children to further grow and understand different cultures. We look forward to participating in your next program.
