High-speed internet “NURO Hikari” starts providing 10 Giga service in Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures

Sony Network Communications Inc. will expand the service area of its high-speed optical line service “NURO Hikari” and begin providing services with maximum communication speeds of 10Gbps (*1) in Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures. In the Tohoku area, we began providing services in Miyagi Prefecture in February 2023, and with this expansion, NURO Hikari’s 10 Giga service will be available in three prefectures in the Tohoku area. Applications and service provision are scheduled to start sequentially from April 15th.

The plans offered in Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures are “NURO Hikari 10 Giga” and “NURO Hikari for Apartment 10 Giga.” We provide high-speed, large-capacity services with a maximum communication speed of 10Gbps for both upstream and downstream connections at a reasonable price. As an example, for the “NURO Hikari 10 Giga (3-year contract)” plan, the basic monthly fee is 5,700 yen (*). Additionally, in addition to the benefit of a basic monthly fee of 980 yen for the first year, there are also other benefits such as the “U29 Support Discount” (*), which allows those under the age of 29 to use the service for a monthly fee of 3,850 yen for four years.

“NURO Hikari” has previously been focused on services with a maximum download speed of 2Gbps (*2), but with the rollout to the Tohoku area in February 2023, 10 Our policy is to only provide gigabytes, and we are now in full swing to expand to 10 gigabytes. In Miyagi Prefecture, one year after the service was launched, 10 Gigabit service is becoming more popular, and by prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture has the second largest number of applications for 10 Gigabit service after Tokyo. We will now provide only 10 gigabytes to Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures, promoting the spread of high-speed lines throughout the country.
In recent years, communication has become more and more online, and the content that users interact with is becoming richer every day, making the role of high-speed and stable communication more important than ever. In this environment, the number of fiber optic lines including NURO Hikari has exceeded 1.5 million lines (*3) for both individuals and corporations.
In the future, we will continue to promote the standardization of 10 gigabyte services that enable faster, higher-capacity communications in order to realize a comfortable future for users.

・The communication speed of “10Gbps” is the maximum speed according to technical standards that can be provided from the network to the home terminal device.
・The maximum communication speed that can be used according to the technical standards for one terminal device is approximately 10Gbps when using a wired connection (using a LAN cable of 10GBASE-T, category 6a or higher), and approximately 4.8Gbps when using a wireless connection (in the premises installed by our company). 2.4Gbps depending on the terminal device model.
・Speeds may decrease depending on the customer’s usage environment (device specifications, etc.), line congestion, etc.

・The communication speed of “2Gbps” is the maximum download speed provided by the technical standard from the network to the home terminal device. It does not indicate the communication speed to each individual terminal device used by the customer.
– The maximum communication speed that can be used by one terminal device according to technical standards is approximately 1Gbps when using a wired connection (1000BASE-T 1 port, using a LAN cable of category 5e or higher) and approximately 1.3Gbps when using a wireless connection. (This is the speed for IEEE802.11ac. It may not be compatible depending on the model of the in-home terminal device installed by us.)
