Harumichi Shibasaki was born in 1947. While serving as an art instructor for a long time, he has continued to exhibit mainly transparent watercolor paintings at solo exhibitions for nearly 30 years based in Ginza and Kyobashi. In addition, he has been publishing the production process of his works on YouTube for seven years, and currently has 1.79 million subscribers (as of April 2024). This time, we take the familiar animal cat as a motif and beautifully express its shape, color, ecology, etc.
artist statement
In fact, I have been involved with cats as creatures for over 70 years. These 10 cats are still in my memory and I remember each one like an old friend. Currently, we live with three cats, and the daily rhythm from when we wake up in the morning until we go to bed at night colors our lives.
Through this life, their various transformative powers have influenced my heart. I speak cat language and they understand human language too. Although we don’t fully understand each other’s words, we feel a good sense of emotional communication, and both I and the cats are satisfied. One day, three stray cats suddenly appeared at my house and became irreplaceable friends for me.
If you think about it, cats were worshiped as sacred beings in ancient Egypt, and their images were carved on walls. It has a history of deeply penetrating human hearts and lives, and its influence is immeasurable.
The theme of this solo exhibition is “Thinking about cats.”
I tried to use transparent watercolors to express the relationship between cats and humans and the emotional exchanges that occur from the mysterious wild nature of cats.
