Background of the birth of “Miyako Yokocho”
In recent years, the number of tourists visiting Miyakojima City has been steadily increasing. Although the numbers temporarily dropped due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of tourists visiting the area in FY2022 will exceed 730,000, and in FY2023, the number of tourists will exceed 730,000, due to the restart of cruise ships from overseas and an increase in the number of direct flights between Tokyo and Miyakojima. The number of cases is rapidly recovering with over 850,000 people in 11 months. In 2024, it is expected that the number of people will return to 1 million people, the same level as before the coronavirus pandemic.

However, while tourists flock to the island, Miyakojima faces the issue of a lack of tourist content. For example, the sea, which is said to be the most beautiful in the East, cannot be enjoyed if it rains, and it is not uncommon for tourists to be at a loss as to where to go when marine activities are cancelled.

Another issue is that the supply of restaurants is not keeping up with the rapidly increasing number of tourists. On the three main streets of Shimozato, Nishizato, and Izato, which are lined with a variety of restaurants, there are many “dinner refugees” who cannot enter the restaurants because they are full. Naturally, both tourists and locals are required to make reservations at restaurants in advance, making it difficult to casually enjoy Miyakojima’s gourmet food.

“Miyako Yokocho” would like to contribute in some small way to solving these issues on the island.

This facility, which can accommodate up to 200 people, is an indoor facility that is safe even on rainy days. The dishes prepared by each restaurant are made with plenty of ingredients from Miyako Island, such as Miyako beef and island vegetables. Not only can you fully enjoy Miyakojima and Okinawan cuisine, but the interior of the restaurant, brightly lit by Ryukyu glass lighting, is lively and dazzling, allowing you to fully enjoy Okinawa and Miyakojima with all your five senses.
In addition, all of the stores that will move in will be operated without reservations. This “yokocho”-style facility, where you can casually drop by and experience seven “delicious cultures of Miyakojima,” will contribute to resolving the dinner refugee problem, and will be a great place for not only tourists but also local residents. , we will provide you with the excitement of discovering new flavors, charms, and food culture of Miyakojima.

The ultimate goal of Miyako Yokocho is to create rich communication where people on the island, both tourists and locals, can come together to enjoy delicious food and deepen mutual understanding through food. It is to be a place for
One of the charms of Yokocho is that people who happen to live next to each other can become friends and form unexpected connections. Once you get to know each other and like each other, tourists will want to visit the island again and again, and locals will want to provide you with even more generous hospitality. The vitality of a region is born from attachment to people. We hope that “Miyako Yokocho” will become a place for such people to become attached to it, and that it will become a wonderful place for tourists and locals to connect.

Miyako Yokocho is a facility whose purpose is to enliven Miyakojima, so we ask the following three companies to serve as “exhibiting company judges” when judging stores to open. I received some advice from this perspective. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all three of them for taking time out of their busy schedules to cooperate with the review and for their warm congratulations on our opening.
