NPO Japan Senior Digital Support Association holds online events twice a month for the elderly

The “Online Class Meeting” held by the NPO Japan Senior Digital Support Association is held twice a month (on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month) for elderly people who have passed their healthy life expectancy and those who wish to interact more with others. We have been holding online events on Zoom.
The elderly people who participated said, “I felt like I had made friends because I was able to communicate with people who live far away.”
Tamai, a practicing nurse who is the organizer, decided to hold the event free of charge because she wanted “even more elderly people to use it as a digital place to stay this year, and to provide a place where they can continue to connect with people forever.” I did. Elderly people will be holding activities under the theme of “Use technology to expand your range of activities and participate in a convenient and fun place to be!” Up until now, we have received participation fees from elderly people and received subsidies from NPOs and other organizations working on local issues in Kobe City. We decided to hold the event for free with the idea that we would like to deliver the following.

-What is an online class meeting-
We named it so that you can enjoy all kinds of themes depending on the trends and seasons, just like the class meetings that were on the timetable in elementary school.
-Thoughts of the organizer-
My name is Chiyoko Tamai, and I am the chairperson of the NPO Japan Senior Digital Support Association.
I am currently doing this while working as a nurse at a clinic. I started this activity because, as a nurse, I came into contact with many elderly people and learned about the real situation of
middle-aged and elderly people.
As we get older, the number of people we interact with tends to decrease. By holding online class meetings, you can prevent isolation and dementia, and create a sense of purpose in life, companionship, and smiles.
Conversation is the best medicine for health. Let’s all laugh and talk and feel warm.

3. Training of certified instructors
(We are also putting effort into training smartphone instructors who will actually be useful to the elderly, including a curriculum created by nurses to help them become smartphone instructors who can be close to the elderly.)
