Aisan Kogyo Co., Ltd. Achieves an environmentally friendly factory through new construction of Anjo New Factory (tentative name) *~Aiming to make the factory carbon neutral by introducing an aquifer thermal storage air conditioning system, etc.~*

Obayashi Corporation (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Kenji Hasuwa) has announced the construction of the new Anjo factory (Headquarters: Obu City, Aichi Prefecture, President: Tokuyuki Nomura) of Aisan Industries Co., Ltd., whose construction began in February 2024. In the new construction (tentative name), we aim to achieve a carbon-neutral environment for the entire factory by introducing various energy-saving technologies, including the Chubu region’s first large-scale aquifer thermal storage air conditioning system (*1), as well as energy creation technologies. We are working to realize a considerate factory.

1 Background of the initiative

Aisan Industries focuses on “decarbonization, resource circulation, and coexistence with nature (biodiversity)” and is actively promoting a shift to highly circular business activities. As part of this effort, we will build a new factory adjacent to the existing Anjo factory that will serve as a manufacturing base for hydrogen-related products and electrification products, thereby creating a comfortable working environment that will coexist and prosper with the local community and the natural environment. We aim to create innovative products.

When constructing a new factory, Obayashi Corporation aims to achieve an annual energy balance of ±0 for the first floor production area (excluding production equipment) and office area from the planning stage, and proposes the introduction of energy-saving and
energy-creating technologies, as well as low-carbon building materials. We have been proposing solutions for decarbonization, including the adoption of

The production area is equipped with an aquifer thermal storage air conditioning system that uses geothermal heat and is expected to reduce energy consumption by approximately 52% compared to
conventional air conditioning systems, and a displacement air conditioning (stratified air conditioning) system. In addition to natural ventilation and daylighting, we have incorporated a variety of energy-saving solutions, including high-efficiency air conditioners and lighting linked to motion sensors. In addition to adopting energy creation solutions such as rooftop solar power generation and storage batteries, we will also introduce technologies that lead to resource circulation and coexistence with nature (biodiversity), such as biotopes.

Obayashi Corporation has committed to SBT with greenhouse gas emission reduction targets (*2) for 2030, and is working on various initiatives to achieve them. Based on the knowledge we have gained through the construction of various facilities, including this project, we will continue to propose a variety of solutions for environmentally friendly factories and other facilities that take decarbonization, resource recycling, and coexistence with nature into consideration. We will continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

*1 Aquifer thermal storage air conditioning system
An air conditioning system that uses geothermal heat. Typical heating and cooling systems emit waste heat into the atmosphere.
In contrast, this system stores waste heat in an underground aquifer and exchanges and uses the stored heat seasonally.
In addition to reducing CO2 emissions through energy conservation, this also reduces the heat island effect.
This is the first place in the Chubu region to introduce a large-scale (over 700kW) system (according to our own research)
