The literary magazine “Shincho” was first published on May 5, 1904 (Meiji 37), during the Russo-Japanese War. It is a literary magazine with an internationally unique history, having been published continuously since then, with the exception of the period immediately after the Great Kanto Earthquake and during World War II.
120 years have passed since the magazine was first published – literary figures have continued to confront the turbulent world with their own words, set in the “Shincho” era. Many masterpieces of Japanese literature have been born from this magazine, from Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s “In the Grove”, Yukio Mishima’s “Kinkaku-ji”, Yoko Ogawa’s “The Mathematical Formula That the Doctor Loved”, to Rie Kudan’s memorable “Tokyo Sympathy Tower”. As of 2024, war is spreading across the ocean, and on the other hand, the pros and cons of using generative AI are being debated in the creative field.
