In Okayama Prefecture, “newborn mass screening tests” targeting 25 diseases are currently being conducted at public expense. This time, the test will be paid at the request of the parents, but this system will be used to test patients with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), B cell deficiency (BCD), and spinal muscular atrophy. We have decided to conduct an “expanded newborn screening test” targeting three diseases: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
From May 1, 2024, in addition to Okayama University Hospital, we will carry out the “Expanded Newborn Screening Test” on a trial basis at facilities that can cooperate with us and perform detailed tests for the “Newborn Mass Screening Test.” From June 1, 2020, we will expand this testing to obstetric medical facilities within the prefecture that are willing to cooperate.
This test will be conducted by the Okayama Prefecture Health Promotion Foundation, but if the test is positive, indicating a possible disease, detailed examination and treatment will be provided individually at Okayama University Hospital.
