LIFULL and Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture conclude a “Comprehensive Collaboration Agreement on Regional Revitalization”
LIFULL Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Yuji Ito, TSE Prime: 2120, hereinafter referred to as “LIFULL”), which works to solve social issues through business, will open its doors on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture (Mayor: Kokawa We have concluded a “Comprehensive Collaboration Agreement on Regional Revitalization” (hereinafter referred to as the “Agreement”) with Shoichi. Nikko City is located in the northwestern part of Tochigi Prefecture and is blessed with rich nature. It has a rich natural landscape including Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and Mt. Nantai, and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of each season. We are also putting a lot of effort into tourism, and many tourists visit Nikko’s shrines and temples, including Nikko Toshogu Shrine, which is registered as a World Heritage Site. On the other hand, population decline is an issue in Nikko City.
The population of Nikko City has been on the decline since peaking at 112,940 people in 1955, and has decreased by more than 18,000 people in the 25 years from 1975 to 2020.
In addition, Nikko City’s population continues to decline, with a declining birthrate and aging population, and the working-age population has also been decreasing rapidly since 1995. Future population projections also predict a critical situation, with the elderly population expected to fall below 30,000 by 2060 and make up more than half of the total population. As a result, there are concerns that not only will the fiscal situation deteriorate due to decreased tax revenue and increased social security costs, but also that local economies will stagnate and local communities will collapse due to labor shortages.
