Loquats have been growing wild in Japan for so long that they are mentioned in the Shosoin documents of 742 A.D., but cultivation began in earnest in the Edo period based on varieties introduced from China. The name “Biwa” comes from the fact that its characteristic gourd shape resembles the traditional musical instrument “Biwa.” At this fair, you can enjoy this season’s bounty, “Loquat”, with its light orange fruits ripening in abundance, heralding the arrival of early summer, with Café Comsa’s cakes.
