Make Tohoku a center of life science industry! “Tohoku Life Science Impact Fund” established
……
Future Venture Capital Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Representative Director, Chairman and President: Daisuke Sawada, hereinafter referred to as “FVC”) is a subsidiary of FVC Tohoku Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, Representative Director and President: Jun Ogawa, hereinafter referred to as “FVC”). Tohoku Life Science Impact Investment Limited Partnership (hereinafter referred to as “Tohoku Life Science Impact Fund ”) has been
established.
◆Background of the establishment of Tohoku Life Science Impact Fund TOLIC (Tohoku Life science Instruments Cluster) (*1), a private organization established to create life science instruments from the Tohoku region to the world, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Additionally, many venture companies have been created in the Tohoku region over the past 10 years, and this number is expected to continue to grow. Therefore, TOLIC envisions three pillars (*2) as the second stage with an eye on the next 10 years for the Tohoku region. As part of this, we have decided to form a new fund with the aim of creating venture businesses and achieving stable growth. As a general partner of the fund, FVCT will strengthen its collaboration with TOLIC and create startups and venture companies in the Tohoku region. (*1) TOLIC: A private organization established in 2014. To date, there are 39 corporate members and 85 related organizations.
The main activities are joint development by member companies and holding conferences.
We are also actively engaged in human resource development activities for high school students and others. (URL: https://tolic.jp/) (*2) Three pillars: As the second stage concept of TOLIC,
1. Establishment of a fund 2. Establishment of a mentor company (establishment of T-Mentors Co., Ltd.)
3. Aim to establish a second HIH (Healthtech Innovation Hub). This time, we have achieved 1. establishment of a fund and 2. establishment of a mentor company.
◆Theme that Tohoku Life Science Impact Fund should aim for
– Through investment in life science companies in the Tohoku region, we aim to cluster R&D and manufacturing industries in Morioka. ・We will provide a place for talented human resources to play an active role through the life science companies in which we invest, and will serve as a receiving ground for young human resources who have found employment outside of Iwate Prefecture.

◆Features of Tohoku Life Science Impact Fund
TOLIC and the newly established mentors of T-Mentors Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “T-Mentors”) will work together to provide sourcing and management support for investee companies. T-Mentors will be responsible for management support (development, sales channels, finance/accounting, etc.) from the early stages of startup, and will work with funds to build a management foundation for startups. There are very few cases in which these functions are incorporated into a fund’s framework, and we believe that it can become a model for supporting local start-ups. (We are oriented toward the American startup ecosystem. In the United States, there is a system in which mentors who have sold their businesses after startup become involved with new startups as mentors or angels.)
