I am on a business trip to Mahanay village in Bohol province. The village is located on a small island in the northwestern part of Bohol. The area of the village is 57 ha, and the number of households is just over 100.
The main industry is fishing, but there are no fishermen to catch fish. They stopped catching fish and turned to seaweed farming. When I go on a business trip, they serve me a seafood lunch of crabs and shrimp, but even though the ocean is right in front of me, I buy seafood from the mainland.
Before I knew it, my countryside had turned to seaweed farming, and I used to go to town to buy fish, so I feel a bit of an affinity for it. In this village, we are implementing a 3R project using the Global Environment Fund’s scheme.
Plastic string and Styrofoam are used in seaweed farming, but now the used plastic string, which was previously disposed of in the ocean, will be collected and transported to the mainland as plastic waste. We received a grand prize from the state government for our local environmental education activities.
Naturally, these environmental activities have a certain effect on the region, but in the future we would like to plan activities that are a little more sophisticated and incorporate the perspective of regional development.
*This project is supported by the Global Environment Fund.
