This year’s theme for Father’s Day at imperfect is “Special Encounters with Coffee.” When asked about the taste of coffee, many people may think of “bitterness.” The coffee beans that imperfect carefully selects from all over the world range from the deep richness of chocolate, to the mellow sweetness of nuts, and the refreshing acidity of lemon tea. Coffee beans are unique, and their taste varies greatly depending on the region of origin, variety, refining method, and degree of roasting.

He was diagnosed with progressive muscular dystrophy at the age of eight and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since. I have loved drawing since I was a child, and whenever I found time I would draw in my doodle pad. The disease gradually progressed, and by the time he was 20 years old, he was put on a nasal mask respirator, and at the age of 42, he had a tracheotomy and a gastrostomy that delivered nutrients directly to his stomach, leaving him almost bedridden. After graduating from school, he entered a work center for people with disabilities and produced and sold postcards. He had already lost the ability to hold colored pencils in his hands, but a staff member suggested, “Since you can operate a computer by holding a switch between your toes, you might be able to use that to draw as well.” I started drawing art and since then started working as a foot artist. Although he is currently using a ventilator, he still draws his favorite pictures on his computer using his toes. In 2016, became an Artbility registered artist. 2018: Received the Artability
Encouragement Award at the 30th Artability Awards. 2020: Received the Koto Ward Mayor’s Award at the 1st Art Para Fukagawa Grand Prize. 2021 “Art Para Fukagawa Main Visual Grand Prize” Bush Crawfied Co., Ltd. Award Winner. 2022: Received the Yamatane Co., Ltd. Award at the 2022 Art Para Fukagawa Grand Prize.
Artist’s thoughts on this collaboration Thank you very much for choosing my work. The philosophy of Imperfect Co., Ltd. and the philosophy of Atelier Foot Artist, a private organization I founded, were similar. No matter the situation, if you don’t give up and keep moving forward, you can work for the world, for people, and for smiles. I would be happy if you were happy with my pictures. At imperfect, we aim to “make your “deliciousness” someone’s “happy””, and imperfect’s products act as a bridge, connecting the customer’s “delicious” to the “happy” of the production area and producer. We aim to create a cycle. A portion of the sales of this product will be allocated to the cost of further activities carried out by imperfect in the production area. Examples of initiatives by coffee farmers and Imperfect ●Supporting the success of women Women farmers working on coffee farms in Brazil work 7.5 hours longer per week than men, yet their income is 30% lower. It is said that there is. This is because women have fewer opportunities to receive sufficient education about coffee production and less access to appropriate information. “Café de Las” is a project that started in Brazil to support women-centered coffee farms, with the aim of respecting women in such situations and providing them with a place where they can thrive. Women participating in this project can learn a variety of knowledge and skills, including knowledge about
agricultural products, techniques for operating farm equipment, and an understanding of farm management. These lessons have led to an increase in the yield of coffee beans and trade at appropriate prices, leading to an increase in income. We at imperfect support the activities of Café Delas and work together to support the success of women.

https://dowellbydoinggood.jp/contents/column/a003/● Utilization of coffee cherries The coffee tree is a plant belonging to the Rubiaceae family, Coffea genus, and produces red fruits called “coffee cherries.” It will bear fruit. The seeds of this fruit are roasted and become coffee beans. On the other hand, most of the pericarp is discarded as waste during the coffee bean refining process, and it is estimated that the amount of pericarp is over 20 million tons each year, equivalent to about 21 Tokyo Domes. Furthermore, if waste is not properly treated and disposed of, it may rot and ferment, producing methane gas, which causes greenhouse gases, and the residue of pesticides and chemical fertilizers used may leak, causing groundwater and rivers to become contaminated. This can lead to pollution and other negative impacts on the environment, including the air and groundwater.

Coffee cherries are harvested when ripe. The pericarp, which is discarded, accounts for about 40% of the whole fruit. Although coffee cherry peels are now mostly discarded, there has been a long tradition of drying and boiling the fruit in the region where it is produced. When you taste it, you can enjoy a taste that is completely different from coffee beans, with a sweet and sour fruity aroma similar to rose hips and a mellow sweetness. At imperfect, we see the current state of coffee cherries being discarded without realizing their appeal as a “waste,” and offer delicious products made with whole coffee as a new way to enjoy coffee. As someone involved in the coffee business, by spreading the value of coffee cherries at the same time, we can reduce wasted portions, create a cycle that reduces environmental impact in producing countries, and create new sources of income for coffee farmers. We aim to realize sustainable production.
