JR East Hotels
[Hotel Metropolitan Kawasaki] 8/10 Sustainable ART workshop held Upcycle your favorite clothes that you can’t throw away and turn them into works of art. Learn valuable weaving lessons directly from artists.
……
Hotel Metropolitan Kawasaki (managed by Nippon Hotel Co., Ltd., general manager Fuminori Kaneda) is certified as a “Kawasaki SDGs Gold Partner” by Kawasaki City, and has made environmentally friendly guest room amenities and equipment, restaurant items, etc. We are promoting SDGs throughout the hotel.
We will be holding a “Sustainable ART Workshop” as a summer
hotel-planned art experience event, where you can learn directly from artist and dyer Rentaro Kawamoto.
By creatively reusing your favorite clothes that you can’t easily throw away into fashionable art, you can increase the added value of the item and extend its lifespan.
The first part will be for children as a project recommended for free research during summer vacation, and the second part will be for adults, with a parfait where they can look back on the workshop while eating hotel-made sweets about their creations.
Recommended for making summer memories by re-recognizing the SDGs and creating art.

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1991. Graduated from Yokohama Art University’s textile design course and completed research studentship at the same university’s sculpture course.
Focusing on the production of textiles, he continues to create works with the unique textures and colors of dyeing and weaving, as well as the background and story of the materials, as important elements. The pieces are made using a technique called sakiori, in which ready-made items such as old cloth and clothes are reassembled into new fabric using a loom.
We see possibilities in the appeal of textiles as a means of expression, going beyond their use as industrial products,
handicrafts, and daily necessities. Main exhibitions include “One” (Gallery Pictor, 2023), “NEWoMan KNIT FESTIVAL” (NEWoMan ART Wall, 2019), SICF18 Kunihiko Morinaga Award (2017), 2nd CAF Award Winner (2015)
