Displayed along the ski slopes of HANAZONO in the summer, the “Firefly” consisting of 24 fiber optic cables blends into the landscape and lights up as 180,000 particles of light. The 180,000 particles of light transform into a 1.3km long band of light called “Arrow Spring”, illuminating the base of Mt. Niseko Annupuri. Arrow Spring, wrapped in a gentle glow just like a real firefly, gently embraces the land of HANAZONO as it receives the Niseko wind. Moon Blooms

In the past, Mountain Lights has been inspired by geomorphology, geology, mythology, and artistic perspectives. While retaining the original artwork, which is an important element, the first new addition is “Moon Blooms,” 1,000 color-changing orbs of light that appear immediately after exiting the gondola. Reminiscent of the snow that covers the land of HANAZONO, the addition of color to previously monochromatic works makes the beginning of a new chapter even more spectacular, just as the plants waiting patiently under the snow begin to bud with the arrival of spring. It is colored by.
Moon Blooms is a development of the work “Field of Light,” which embodies Bruce’s experience when he visited Uluru, a world heritage site in Australia. It has been successfully held in countries all over the world, including South Korea.
The mysterious music that evokes the changing light of the day enhances the beauty of the illuminations and invites you to a romantic and fantastical world.

The second piece, “Prismatic Spring,” appears as you walk through the land of Moon Blooms, which have strong roots and shine straight toward the sky. Hanging from the 69 tree-like structures, the light flowers bloom like orchids and change colors, forming a tree-lined avenue that sways in the air, drawing the consciousness of visitors from the ground to the sky.
“Mountain Lights” is a magnificent light walking path that spreads out under the sky of Niseko, Hokkaido, where countless stars twinkle. Please enjoy an unparalleled immersive experience of rich nature and light that can only be experienced in Niseko in the world.

The gondola allows you to see the entire work from the sky, giving you a panoramic view of the rural landscape of Niseko Aria and the typical Hokkaido mountains that extend all the way to Sapporo, such as Mt. Yoichi. After getting off, enjoy the light art up close while leisurely following the walking path.
The Mountain Lights Inspiration
Bruce Munro’s work is inspired by the shared experience of human life, which has been a strong interest for him for decades.
Since ancient times, humans have been associated with fire, providing benefits such as light and warmth, and sharing its mysterious brilliance with others. For example, the Ainu people, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, consider fire to be a motherly goddess and mediator, and the Aboriginal people of faraway Australia also expressed their compassion for others through fire.
Munro interprets the light produced by electricity as a modern “fire” and expresses humanity’s shared experience using fire as a medium through Mountain Lights. Mountain Lights is woven into the warmth and compassion that has been shared through fire since time immemorial. Artist profile

Bruce Munro is a British installation artist. His works using light have been exhibited around the world. In 2019, Field of Light at Sensorio, held in Paso Robles, California, attracted worldwide attention. The New York Times describes the charm of his work as follows: “There is nothing quite like this magical sight at dusk in the foothills of Paso Robles, a popular wine region. Thousands of Munro’s solar-powered glass spheres create a colorful terrestrial aurora borealis. It is a magical time that envelops all who come. Munro is widely known for his large-scale, immersive installations that use light, inspired by his interest in the “shared experiences of human life.” For over 30 years, I’ve made it my life’s work to capture my ideas and images in sketchbooks. This allows me to record my reactions to stimuli such as music, literature, science, and the world around me, and use these as references, considerations, and themes for my works. This tendency, combined with career training in the creation of works of light, is coupled with a commitment to composition and a quest for regeneration. As a result, Munro creates both experiential artwork and everyday story pieces.
