Freeride certified as an official event by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS)
*Reykjavik on June 5, 2024/
At the general meeting of the Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS) held in Iceland, freeride skiing & snowboarding was unanimously recognized as an official FIS event. *
With this certification, Freeride Ski & Snowboard is recognized within ski associations around the world.
We will officially proceed with player development. Following the acquisition of FWT by FIS in December 2022, we have entered the second phase of the development of freeride competitions on a global scale. It is attracting attention as a way to expand support for athletes and increase the possibility of being included in the Winter Olympics in the future. This is an event that is expected to have a major impact on the freeride community. It will give athletes a platform to showcase their skills on an international stage and empower the next generation of freeriders to pursue their passions with greater support and resources.
*Comments from Nicolas Hale-Woods, Founder and CEO of FWT*
“This is an important day for the freeride community. Recognition of freeride skiing and snowboarding as an official FIS discipline will elevate the sport and provide new opportunities for athletes around the world. We are excited about the freeride movement and what the future holds.”
* Comments from FIS President Johan Eliasch *

“FIS is a home for all forms of snowsports, for everyone, so it makes sense that we fully embrace exciting new disciplines like freeride. We welcome them as part of our family. I am thrilled to be able to welcome you as a member.”

[About freeride skiing and snowboarding]
Freeride is a new style of winter sport where you can enjoy not only ski slopes but also the natural terrain of the mountains, and it is gaining popularity around the world and in Japan. In particular, Japan’s large amount of high-quality powder snow is known overseas as “Japow (Japan)”.
