Urine was collected from patients undergoing clean intermittent urinary catheterization and repeatedly contacted with the hydrophobic filter of an intermittent urinary catheter OT Balloon Catheter (R) to evaluate its durability.
The filter remained breathable in all samples when handled normally and in more than half of the samples when not cleaned at all. It was suggested that the OT Balloon Catheter(R) allows simple intermittent balloon catheter placement for a sufficient period of time and safely.

◆Summary National University Corporation Okayama University
(Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu), Dr. Tomofumi Watanabe, Assistant Professor, Department of Urology, Okayama University Hospital, Takuya Sadahira, Academic Research Institute, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, Hajime Araki In joint research with Otsuka Techno Co., Ltd. (Tokushima Prefecture), Professor Akira’s research group investigated the clogging
characteristics of the hydrophobic filter in the OT Balloon Catheter (R) (manufacturer: Otsuka Techno Co., Ltd.). The test was conducted using urine collected from a patient undergoing clean intermittent catheterization.
The results showed that the hydrophobic filter maintained its breathability in all samples when washed with running water after urine exposure, and in more than half of the samples even when no washing was performed.
While intermittent balloon catheter placement can reduce the effort required for urinary catheterization, it is necessary to prepare a location where urinary catheterization can be performed, and to actually check the flow of urine from the inserted catheter before placing the catheter.
This time, we demonstrated that the hydrophobic filter of the OT Balloon Catheter(R) can maintain high air permeability even when repeatedly exposed to urine. These results suggest that the OT Balloon Catheter(R)’s unique feature of catheter placement, which does not require urine outflow, can be safely performed during the recommended period of use.
These research results were published as a research article in the academic journal “Continence Reports” of the International Continence Society on May 4, 2024, and released by Okayama University on June 6.

◆A word from the researchers
Until now, patients who required clean intermittent catheterization or intermittent balloon catheter placement have always been subject to restrictions in their daily lives, such as having to prepare a place where urine catheterization can be performed. I was wondering if there was a way to somehow remove this everyday barrier that we tend to forget, and I was fortunate enough to be able to conduct this research. We hope that this research will help improve the quality of life of patients suffering from urinary disorders.
