With the realization of the “GIGA School Concept”, one tablet device has been distributed to each elementary and junior high school student across the country, and as the digitalization of education progresses, Otemon Gakuin Elementary School (Chuo Ward, Osaka City, Principal: Keiji Inoue) will hold an English teaching skills improvement course for elementary school teachers on June 21, 2024, and will provide training to practice English lessons using the latest technology, generative AI.

This course aims to further develop “foreign language education” in elementary schools, which was made compulsory in the revised curriculum guidelines in 2020, and to improve the teaching abilities of teachers. The event has been held since 2023 with the aim of learning elementary school English teaching skills across public and private schools.Last year, approximately 50 people from elementary schools in the Kansai area participated in each event. This year, the second year, we are planning a total of three lectures on the theme of “Development of English learning materials and classroom practice using generative AI”, and the lecturer will be Shingo Matsumiya of Otemon Gakuin University, an affiliated school. A professor from the Faculty of International Studies (specialty: English education) will serve as the chairperson.
On the day of the event, we will conduct training on how to use the voice function of ChatGPT (free version) to speak to a tablet and give individual English conversation lessons in real time. Through voice dialogue with AI, you will experience firsthand the extent to which practical communication can be achieved. We also plan to exchange opinions on how to improve classes, while considering the modern English education that is not just about cramming knowledge. At Otemon Gakuin Elementary School, in order to strengthen the development of human resources who can play an active role in the world, we have established an international education center with the theme of “World, Global, Space, and Humanity,” and are working to promote international understanding and develop English education in Japan. We are making efforts to contribute. This course is also part of that effort.
