Okayama University and Benesse Corporation collaborate to provide educational opportunities to high school students undergoing long-term treatment.
Attendance is counted as attendance at Benesse’s online lectures, and we have started an initiative aimed at avoiding repeating a grade. Not only does it enable flexible learning that suits the patient’s physical condition and treatment schedule, it also reduces the burden on the teaching site and improves the quality of education.

◆Overview
Due to a policy change by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in April 2023, the system was revised to enable the delivery of on-demand classes to children undergoing medical treatment, etc., and it is now possible to receive credit for on-demand classes. However, the creation of individual lesson content is left to the teachers at the school where the patient is enrolled, which increases the workload of teachers, which is a major obstacle. Therefore, Associate Professor Hasei of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) has developed a new program targeting high school students who are hospitalized for long periods of time. We have started an educational support program from August 2024.
This program collaborates with Benesse Corporation, the largest distance learning provider, and utilizes Benesse’s diverse educational content, allowing students to learn according to their physical condition and treatment schedule. This will pave the way for students undergoing long-term treatment to continue their studies and graduate without having to repeat a grade, and will also reduce the burden on school teachers.
This matter was made public at the Okayama University regular press conference held on August 28, 2024.
◆A message from Associate Professor Hasei
Up until now, in addition to going through a difficult period of fighting a long illness, I have been forced to repeat a grade again, which is an extremely difficult situation. Although the number of online classes has increased, it is often difficult for long-term care patients whose physical condition changes on a daily basis to take simultaneous two-way classes, which poses a challenge. Preserving the opportunity for high school students battling illness to receive an education will be a big step towards their future.
This program is an important milestone in the digitalization of healthcare and education, and has the potential to not only improve the quality of life of students, but also lead to innovation of the entire educational system.
By collaborating with Benesse, we will be able to flexibly provide high-quality educational content and support that is tailored to the needs of each student.
