According to the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (*1) in June 2024, the amount spent on consumption by households of two or more people decreased by 1.4% in real terms, excluding price changes, compared to the same month of the previous year. Against this backdrop, consumers’ tendency to save money continues. On the other hand, actual income has increased by 3.1% compared to the same month in the previous year, and in this day and age where both husband and wife work, the number of power couple households is increasing year by year (*2). This time, we focused on the purchasing behavior of power couples who are increasing their presence in the soaring housing market amid soaring prices, and conducted a survey on their attitudes regarding spending.

When asked, “Q1. How much has the recent price hike affected your household finances?” (n=108), 47.2% answered “It has affected me very much” and 35.2% answered “It has affected me somewhat.” The answer was %.

For those who answered “Very affected” or “Somewhat affected” in Q1, please respond with “Q2. Please tell us which items you are reviewing or planning to review your spending due to the soaring prices.” When asked “Top 3)” (n=89), 61.8% said “Grocery”, 46.1% said “Eating out”, and 25.8% said “Daily necessities.”

When asked, “Q3. Do you have any plans to purchase expensive goods or services as prices continue to soar?” (n=108), 50.0% answered “yes” and 50.0% answered “I have no plans, but I am considering it.” 13.9% of respondents answered “Yes.”

When asked, “Q4. As prices continue to soar, what do you find attractive when choosing expensive goods or services to purchase or use? (Top 3)” (n=108). 63.0% said “something that matches my values,” 47.2% said “something that is rational and efficient,” and 24.1% said “something that is considerate of SDGs and the
environment.”

Those who answered “Very much” or “Somewhat” in Q5 were asked “Q6. What are you dissatisfied with? (Multiple answers)” (n=74). 47.3% said “There aren’t enough rooms,” 45.9% said “Not enough storage space,” and 44.6% said “Not enough storage space,” indicating that many problems are caused by floor plans.

Those who answered “Very much” or “Somewhat” in Q5 were asked, “Q7. Which of the following do you think would help alleviate your dissatisfaction? (Multiple answers allowed)” (n=74) The results showed that 48.6% said they had “financial resources,” 45.9% said they had time to consider things carefully, and 43.2% said they had someone with knowledge and trust to consult.
