On April 1, 2020, in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, a “postpartum doula” will visit the home of pregnant women and those who have given birth less than 6 months ago to provide physical and mental care for the mother, as well as housework and childcare. We have started the “Itabashi Ward Prenatal and Postnatal Support Project,” which provides support such as: A “postpartum doula” is a specialist certified by the Doula Association, a general incorporated association, who has the knowledge and skills to support the unique needs of women before and after childbirth.

Background of the introduction of the system
In order to build a system to seamlessly watch over and raise all children, the ward has changed the function of the “Child and Family Center” in which the Child and Family Comprehensive Support Center and the Health and Welfare Center provide integrated support for children and families. With the establishment on April 1, 2016, we started a prenatal and postnatal support project as one of the measures to enhance childcare support, including during pregnancy. In addition to this project, we also offer the “Babysitter Usage Support Project (Temporary Child Care Usage Support)” (starting December 2020), the “Childcare Support Helper Dispatch Project” (renewed on April 1, 2020), and the existing By developing various businesses such as “Family Support” and “Short Stay,” we will expand the range of services that residents who need support with pregnancy and childcare can choose from.

Up to 30 hours (up to 60 hours in case of multiple fetuses (multiple pregnancy))

1,300 yen per hour (half price for households exempt from resident tax, exempt for households on welfare)

Monday to Sunday (including holidays) 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (excluding New Year’s holidays 12/29 to 1/3)

Simple daily housework (preparing and cleaning up meals, shopping for ingredients, cleaning, laundry, etc.)
Assisting with breastfeeding, diaper changing/dressing, bathing Care for siblings and transportation to nursery schools and kindergartens within walking distance
Accompaniment on hospital visits, childcare consultation/advice, consultation on postpartum life planning, etc.
