Tokyo, Japan, June 2024 5
Japan – Sumida Mukojima EXPO (operated by Sumida Mukojima EXPO Executive Committee, Sumida-ku, Tokyo) will be held for approximately one month from October 5, 2024 (Saturday) to November 3, 2024 (Sunday) this year. We would like to inform you that we have announced that the event will be held.

The Sumida Mukojima EXPO is a rare event closely connected to the region that began in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic and has continued uninterrupted for the past five years.

This year, based on past events, we will focus on the activities, lifestyle, and atmosphere of this historic town, as well as the people who participate, with the concept being a blank space where each person can feel free. This concept was developed by Souda, a food artist who has been active in regional revitalization through food and art festivals throughout Japan.
Lua created it based on that experience.

At EXPO, each person fills in the blank brackets with free ideas and imagination, creating projects that are different for each
participant.
Think of everything in town as art and find the work that’s right for you. logo image. This year, we plan to use logos created by multiple artists listed above.

* 2. What this year’s Sumida Mukojima EXPO aims to do *
This activity is a social experiment, community development, and art project. We hope that the Sumida Mukaijima EXPO will allow people to enjoy the town from a free perspective, spreading the appeal of this unique area, adding new value, and preserving it.
We hope that all participants will become witnesses to this city, which is constantly changing and is about to attract even more attention.

* 3. Theme *
* This year’s theme is “Flowers” and “Forest”. *
Set in the entire Kyojima area, which still retains its historical features from around the Meiji period, various artists create works and display them throughout the town, using “flowers” as a symbol of celebration and beginnings, and the town itself as an organic “forest.” We will provide you with a month in which flowers will bloom. Specifically, the participating flower arrangers and florists decorate shops and homes with flowers and hold flower arranging workshops, which naturally improves their relationships with the people of the town. Then, painters and artists likened old houses to trees with annual rings, painted flowers and forests, brought vivid colors to the town and visualized the history of photography, and artists shined light on the town so that the town and its people would take center stage. We envision a landscape in which the town is a forest, the buildings are trees, and the people living there are blooming with flowers.

* 4. Background of concept and theme setting *
This concept was devised after searching for a way for casual visitors to enjoy interacting with the town, in order to further expand the population of this town and create deeper connections. The themes of “flowers” and “forest” came to mind when I saw the residents of this area, where there are relatively few large parks or greenery, enjoying the changing seasons in small planters under their eaves or in trees at shrines. The themes are universal, rooted in daily life, and close to the town.

* What is Sumida Mukojima Expo *
“Sumida Mukojima EXPO” is set in the towns around Kyojima, Yahiro, and Bunka in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, where people who have lived there for a long time, people who have moved here in search of expressive activities, and others who are drawn to the mysterious charm of this place. This is an immersive local event that has been held every fall since 2020 with the support of people from all over the world. This month-long festival features various art exhibits, project
announcements, guerrilla events, and more, set in the buildings and shopping streets of this town where pre-war tenement houses still remain.

Sponsoring organization: Yashima Flower Culture Foundation
“Yatsushimahana” is derived from the names of the towns of Yahiro, Kyojima, and Bunka located in the northern part of Sumida Ward, and broadly refers to the Mukojima area. This area, which survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo air raids, still retains the townscape of the early Showa era, and the traditions and lifestyle of old Tokyo are still alive and well. While the scenery is nostalgic and warm, the area also faces many challenges such as disaster prevention and real estate development. The foundation was established in 2023 with the aim of tackling these issues and passing on the lifestyle and culture of this town to the future.
The foundation regards both tangible (land and buildings) and intangible (lifestyles and activities) as important local resources, and by creating new value in them, we actively carry out various projects to improve the attractiveness of the town. It is expanding.
